Teletherapy

It’s complicated.

You know you need to get to your therapy session – it’s important – and you’re making substantial progress – but you can’t get there in person.

Busy – whether you’re trying to get to your own session or pick up your child for his, it’s tough to get through traffic on time. The stress of distance, time, and other drivers sets you on edge before you even get started.

Unwell – perhaps the anxiety is getting to you. You don’t feel as though you can handle going out of the house, or maybe you’re concerned that an office atmosphere might feel uncomfortable for your child.

Concerned – you want to come to your session, but you have high-risk family members at home and don’t want to risk getting out in the middle of a pandemic. You’re not sure how you can take care of your own needs or those of your child while looking out for vulnerable members of your family.

Thanks to technology, teletherapy offers a solution for all those concerns and more.

It’s a snap!

These days, it’s easier than ever to do counseling from home – or anywhere you need to be. All you need is a device with a microphone and camera, a secure Internet connection, and a little privacy.

And it’s safe.

I use a secure telehealth platform through Simple Practice. I’ll provide you with a completely confidential private client portal.

On your end, however, it’s important to keep in mind that other people in the house might hear you/us. You can minimize this concern by closing off a section of the house to yourself, closing the door to the room you’re in, and using headphones or earbuds.

“Is it right for me?”

Do I do teletherapy, also known as telehealth? Yep, I sure do. Is it my preference? No.

When I meet with someone face-to-face, countless intangibles make it easier to communicate in the same room together. One example includes gestures that are difficult, if not impossible, to see through a screen.

I find that young people, especially, benefit from in-person counseling. Adults can be better at making up for anything lost through a video conversation. However, kids and teens are not usually as good at communicating, so in-person sessions are best. Keep in mind that, for some, it’s not ideal at all.

That said, there is a horrible virus going on right now. If you are sick or have been in contact with someone who has Coronavirus, please do not come in for a session. In these circumstances, the only option for a session is telehealth.

It may be exactly what you need!

You may find you prefer telehealth – for a variety of reasons. I ask that new clients come in for their first three sessions in person, if at all possible. Doing so helps establish a good, trusting relationship.

After that, we can do some telehealth sessions when needed. If you have questions or a special circumstance, ask me, and we’ll work it out together!
